1,820 feet of gain isn’t so shabby for a single speed’s inaugural ride.
Finished this build up a few weeks ago, just got to take it out today. It’s a 2015 Niner SIR frame, with a Race Face Aeffect crankset and wolftooth 28:22 drivetrain and some previous-gen XT brakes. Particularly enjoying it, the lack of options is kind of refreshing.

I like a no frills hard tail. It becomes more about the ride than the gear. I bought a hard tail specialized epic last year and I really enjoy riding it, just not on really bumpy trails.

No Coors tour after?

I know how urine is made. I make a mean batch myself.

I get that you’re going for a less is more approach but I ’m surprised at the lack of dropper post. I don’t know if I could ever go back to not having one.

A dropper is possibly the only thing I’d consider adding. It would be a bit nicer on the descents but I can manage . I’ll add there aren’t too many 27.2mm droppers, there really isn’t a good cable routing for this frame, and this was a bit of a budget build as I’m working on another hardtail, which might get a dropper at some point.

Very nice. What size ring and cog are you running? I’m in the process of rebuilding my old single speed right now. I set it up 30x15 when I pieced somewhere flat but it is pretty useless now that I’m in the hills. No way could I make that climb you just did.

Th at makes a lot of sense. Kind of an old seat tube size, is it an older frame?

30:15! Must have been flat/gently rolling. No way I could run those ratios in the front range. Mine is set up 28:22, with an extra 20t cog on for an extra ratio option if need (small enough that I can run the same length of chain.) I’ll add that there are essentially no flat/rolling trails in this area and I’m a high-cadence rider. Some others tend to run 30:20 in this area.

Aye, it’s a 2015 frame, though it has a 44mm head tube for tapered forks, but a max rotor size of 160mm in the rear.

Yeah I used to live in San Antonio, TX. It’s on a big flat escarpment. Hills just north of it but nothing in town. Thanks for the advice. It’s a lightweight build so I’m thinking of keeping the chainring and a 20 might work but I can probably just buy a 20 and 22 and see how it goes - easy enough to change out!

Now I’m trying to figure out what I can bike to from my house.
